CQT expands national footprint with new appointments
The Centre welcomes five new research groups and enhances support for two existing group leaders

(From top, from left) Congratulations to Johnson Goh, Antonios Varvitsiotis, Nelly Ng, Timothy Liew, Young-Wook Cho, Mile Gu and Dario Poletti on their new appointments at CQT.
New senior appointments at the Centre for Quantum Technologies affirm the national status the centre took from the start of 2025 under Singapore’s National Quantum Strategy. In April and May, the Centre has welcomed five new research groups and enhanced support for two existing group leaders.
Group leaders at CQT hold the title of CQT Principal Investigator (PI) or CQT Fellow, alongside faculty or staff appointments at universities or Singapore’s mission-driven Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR).
As a national centre, CQT is hosted by the National University of Singapore (NUS) and supports nodes at the Nanyang Technological University, Singapore (NTU Singapore), Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD) and A*STAR.
The new groups are spread across these partner institutions with appointments starting in April and May. We are pleased to welcome these researchers and their teams:
Kuang Eng Johnson Goh – CQT Principal Investigator (A*STAR)
Holding a primary appointment as Senior Principal Scientist at A*STAR, Johnson works on the experimental realisation of solid-state qubits hosted in low-dimensional material systems. He is also Director of Singapore’s Quantum Engineering Programme and leads the National Quantum Sensor Programme. Learn more at Johnson’s group page and read his Meet a CQTian interview.
Antonios Varvitsiotis – CQT Fellow (SUTD)
Antonios is an Assistant Professor at SUTD whose background is in mathematics and computer science. His group does research in areas including optimisation, machine learning and quantum computing for finance. Learn more at Antonios’ group page and look out for an interview with Antonios coming soon!
Nelly Ng Huei Ying – CQT Fellow (NTU)
As a Nanyang Assistant Professor at NTU, Nelly heads a theory group that is focused on understanding the fundamental limits of controlling and manipulating quantum resources. Learn more at Nelly’s group page and read her Meet a CQTian interview.
Timothy C H Liew – CQT Fellow (NTU)
Timothy is an Associate Professor at NTU whose theory group works on the development of exciton-polaritonics, including the potential application of exciton-polaritons in optical information processing. Learn more at Timothy’s group page and look out for an interview with Timothy coming soon!
Young-Wook Cho – CQT Fellow (A*STAR)
Young-Wook heads an experimental group at A*STAR’s Quantum Innovation Centre working on photonics components – including squeezed light, entangled photon pairs, and quantum memories – to realise practical systems for quantum communication, sensing, and computing. Learn more at Young-Wook’s group page and read his Meet a CQTian interview.
Two group leaders who were previously CQT Fellows, Dario Poletti at SUTD and Mile Gu at NTU, have also been appointed as CQT Principal Investigators.
As members of CQT, group leaders receive support from the Centre’s core funding, can supervise PhD students under the National Quantum Scholarships Scheme, and can access centralised research support, administration, and outreach services.
The Centre is still seeking to grow and will consider applications from prospective group leaders who have or are applying for positions in NUS, NTU, SUTD or A*STAR and have a strong track record in research in quantum technologies.
